The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceans. Its was named by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
The ocean extends from the Arctic to Antarctica, and has Asia and Australia on teh western side and the Americas on the eastern side.
The Pacific Ocean has an area of approximately 170 million square kilometres. It covers approximately 50% of the Earth's water surface and just over 30% of the total surface area. This make the ocean larger than all of the Earth's land area combined.
The equator seperates the Pacific ocean into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. The Mariana Trench, which is in the North Pacific, is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres.
