Echidnas, commonly called spiny ant eaters, live in Australia and New Guinea. They have powerful claws so thay can dig into the ground to find worms and ant and termites nests. Echidnas have long tongues up to 20cm in length.
The echidna are egg laying mammals (monotremes). The female lays a single egg and stores it inside a pouch on her belly. When the egg hatches the baby echidna suckles milk from the mother for up to six weeks and then leaves the pouch.
