The dodo is well known around the world. But it is known for the negative fact that these birds are now extinct, and that the reason that they are extinct is directly down to mankind!
The dodo was a flightless bird that lived in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. It was approximately a meter tall and, critically, nested on the ground.
The Dodo had no natural enemies. When the first European ships arrived at the island, these birds were easy to catch for food. But a bigger problem was caused by the rats which also arrived on these ships. The humans and the rats were enough to decimate the Dodo population and bring them to extinction!
