The swallow visits the UK every year arriving in April after a 6,000 mile journey from where these birds over winter in southern Africa. This epic journey takes these small birds around 30 days.
Swallows breed through the summer and by September are ready to migrate back to South Africa. Interestingly the youngsters which hatch early in the summer are the first to go back. They seem to know where to go without adult birds guiding them.
The Blue-and-white Swallow is a passerine bird that breeds in most of the areas from Nicaragua south throughout South America. The Blue-and-white Swallow feeds mainly on insects caught whilst the birds are in flight.
