Mambas belong to the genus Dendroaspis and are part of the family of Elapidae which includes cobras, coral snakes and kraits.
The black mamba has highly posionous venom which is usally fatal without entivenom treatment. The western green and the eastern green mambas are also poisonous but these snakes are generally smaller than the black so the amount of venom in a bite is usually less.
